World War I in Washington: A Walking Tour - Spring 2019

with author and historian Garrett Peck

Sunday, April 14, 12 p.m. to 2:30pm

The First World War was the most important war of the twentieth century: by the end of it, four global empires had fallen, communism was unleashed, and the punishing peace treaty set the stage for the bloody sequel two decades later. The U.S. was late to enter the war in April 1917, but President Woodrow Wilson rallied the nation with the stirring call that “the world must be made safe for democracy.” American victories on the battlefield ensured a place at the peace table, where the League of Nations was born.

Few American cities were affected by the war as much as the nation’s capital. This 2.5 mile, 2.5-hour walking tour explores the memorials and monuments, protest sites, temporary buildings and theaters, and above all the people who helped the U.S. win the Great War. The tour begins at Lafayette Square at the Andrew Jackson statue, and ends there as well. Your guide is author and historian Garrett Peck.

We encourage you to pre purchase a copy of Peck’s latest book, The Great War in America: World War I and Its Aftermath, which will be published nationally on December 4. Peck will sign copies of the book which will be distributed ahead of the tour.

Participants are encouraged to take Metro to McPherson Square, as street parking is very limited around the White House.
