Then Comes Marriage is both an amazing look behind the scenes of the United States vs Windsor case against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and also an incredibly touching look at the lives of Edie Windsor and her spouse of 44 years, Thea Spyer. Roberta (Robbie) Kaplan, who fought the case from 2009 until it's eventual success before the Supreme Court in 2013, lays bare the framework that became the basis of her argument and shows the sometimes grueling process of working such a complex case through the system in a timely manner. Her wit and humor will make you laugh and keep you hooked and Edie and Thea's story will make you reflect on life and what it means to truly love.

A brilliant look into modern drone warfare, the intense debate on the constitutionality of killing an American citizen without trial and the story of Anwar Al-Awlaki, the American born Imam who at first used his position as a widely known religious scholar to sincerely encourage American Muslims to be the bridge between the Western Culture and Islam in the days following 9/11 before ultimately switching sides and helping encourage and support multiple attacks on the United States from Yemen. This book serves as an interesting look behind closed doors in the conversation on national security and intelligence in the United States, from the White House to the field. Overall, a fascinating page turner that you're sure to take something from.

This book is a wonderful example of just how far we’ve come as a society in recent years. It’s packed full of stories of teachers who have grappled with their sexuality and how open they needed to be with their students and coworkers. They express their fears of losing the connection with their students that they had tried so hard to build and the pure excitement when, after “coming out”, their students accepted them for who they were. I found myself laughing out loud at quite a few stories and others were a bit tough to get through. All in all, an inspiring and highly recommended read just as school is starting back.
