One-Punch Man - Yusuke Murata

Are you a fan of superhero comics, but wish they'd spend less time mired in endless crossovers and years of continuity? Longing for a hint of that spark that brought you to the genre in the first place? One Punch Man is the answer: a Japanese comic about a put-upon superhero so powerful that he can defeat any enemy, no matter how terrifying, in JUST. ONE. PUNCH. You'd think that'd get tiring after a while, but mad genius ONE and fabulous artist Yusuke Murata combine the snappy humor of a webcomic with some of the best action scenes in comics to create what's for my money the best pure superhero comic currently being serialized.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell - Susanna Clarke

With the recent end of BBC's excellent TV adaptation, there's no better time than now to check out Susanna Clarke's ten-year masterpiece. It's a comedy of manners, it's a fully rendered alternate history, it's bubbling over with a deeply realized sense of the weird that erupts into something incredible in the final chapters. Granted, this is no book for the faint of heart: it comes with dozens of charming but occasionally digressive footnotes, and the story takes a while to play its hand. But the magic in this set of Tarot cards stands alone as the work of a singular imagination, fully worth the ten years it took to conjure.
