A thirty year old journalist running late for an interview, ends up being raped at knife point. Afterwards, her assailant says he will find her. But years after his conviction and imprisonment, the author ends up finding him. In harrowing detail no newspaper would print, Connors confronts her ordeal and then uncovers the cycle of poverty, domestic violence and substance abuse that shaped her attacker’s life. I couldn’t put it down.

I love this book! Not only is it a great introduction to Proust but devotees will enjoy it too. Proust was a master of atmospherics and nuance, a keen observer of Parisian society and human nature, and he had a terrific sense of humor. Heuest’s charming illustrations illuminate all these elements while Goldhammer’s thoughtful translation reveals structural components and overarching themes I hadn’t noticed before.

This fascinating novel hypothesizes that the heart of Christianity lies not in a trinity but in a duo: Twins named Jesus and Christ. Jesus is a storyteller with a moral conscience. Christ is the weaker brother, quick to self-justify and cover his tracks. Jesus is the leader, the man of his time, but Christ is the scribe with an eye on posterity. You’ll hear rhythmical echoes of the King James translation in the writing. But Pullman’s subtle and decisive changes of biblical stories address inconsistencies, provide food for thought and are also very moving.
