It’s authentic, unapologetic and often even cringe worthy. It’s also completely addictive. Volume 5 is the penultimate book of My Struggle and comes full circle to where we started in Volume I. The narrative centers on student life in Bergen, sex, rock n roll, alcohol abuse, a search for love and Knausgaard’s development as a young writer. It may not sound like much. I can only say that 600 plus pages flashed right by and still I want more!

For decades Father John Goeghan raped and sexually abused countless children in his church. But more concerned about saving face than protecting the victims, the Boston archdiocese simply moved him from one parish to another. Until a handful of Boston Globe journalists broke the story. It was just the tip of the iceberg. This is the story of the evil they uncovered. It knows no geographical bounds. It is a story of lost  faith, lost innocence and lost purity which ultimately turned into a crisis for the Catholic church.

Andrei, a pediatrician, is coerced into treating the son of a high-ranking secret police officer in Stalin’s government. As Andrei is drawn into the life and fate of his patient, he realizes that the lives of his own family also hang in the balance. When she writes about Andrei's brutal interrogation and dignified stand for truth, Helen Dunmore reminds us that good literature is often the most enduring testament to the painful realities of history. Longlisted for the Booker Prize, this is a compelling and beautifully crafted novel.
