Clotilde's Edible Adventures in Paris - Clotilde Dusoulier

My trip to Paris would have been a lot less delicious without Clotilde Dusoulier's handy, expert little guide. In addition to detailed descriptions of favorite restaurants in each arrondissement (recommendations that read like friendly confidences), Clotilde points you to the best markets, grocers and specialty stores. She's also sensitive to a range of budgets and dietary needs. Get pain au chocolat from Eric Kayser and macarons from Pierre Hermè. Indulge with crepes at Breizh Cafe and a prix fixe at Bistro Paul Bert. Picnic at Lutèce after picking up cheese, meats and baguettes from the outdoor market on rue Monge. And when you get home, re-create these meals with recipes from Clotilde's excellent Parisian cooking blog, Chocolate & Zucchini.

What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets - Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio

In What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets, researchers Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio focus on the daily eating habits of a varied group of people from all over the world. Pictured with the food they typically eat in a day are a sadhu priest in India, a Chinese acrobat, a taxi driver in the U.S., a homemaker in Yemen, a bullfighter in Spain, to name just a few. Many of the details are surprising. The head monk in a Tibetan monastery takes in an amazing 4900 calories a day while the American taxi driver eats only 2000 per day. These and other dietary facts make readers reexamine traditionally held beliefs about food, obesity and the differences and similarities between cultures. Also included are essays by Michael Pollan, Wendell Berry, and other contemporary commentators on the global effects of what we eat. The profiles, accompanied by photos, provide an interesting and nuanced look into the lives of a rich sampling of our population

Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef - Gabrielle Hamilton

The best food writing is always about more than food, and that is the case with Blood, Bones, and Butter (Random House, $26), the excellent memoir and first book by Gabrielle Hamilton, the chef and owner of Prune, a popular restaurant in New York City’s East Village.  The book is part coming-of-age tale about the pluses and minuses of growing up with artistic and food-loving parents whose divorce ultimately shattered their children’s lives.  Beyond recounting her family travails, Hamilton uses her considerable training and skill as a writer to describe how a succession of food experiences (including hunger) led her to open a restaurant that would transcend the faddish trends of modern American cooking. A cross between M.F.K Fisher and Patti Smith? Sort of. Hamilton’s book will appeal not only to cooks and omnivores, but to anyone who appreciates a well-told story about finding one’s passion and meaning in life.
