The Odyssey, translated by Emily Wilson

Staff Pick

I’ve read several translations of The Odyssey, and Emily Wilson's is easily the best--clear, plain, readable, both contemporary and true to the original. Rather than imitating Homer's dactylic hexameter, like previous verse translators, she uses blank verse--a far more natural choice for English. The result is a beautiful, musical new telling of the stories of Telemachus finding his way to adulthood; of shrewd, steadfast Penelope, alone and beset by boorish, grasping suitors; and of Odysseus, the world traveler, brilliant soldier, and guileful schemer, who at the end of the day wants nothing more than to go home to his wife.

Starting with the reptile-textured cover, this is the definitive guide for Godzilla fans or anyone interested in Japanese cinema and popular culture. It's also a beautiful book, featuring lots and lots of gorgeous, glossy production stills and original posters accompanied by punchy, insightful commentary on not just the films, but also on Godzilla's appearances on TV and in manga. Even the most dedicated Godzilla buffs will learn something here--did you know, for example, that there was a re-edited and colorized Italian version of the original, entitled Cozilla? This volume is Informative, entertaining, and terrific fun.
