Candy Darling by Cynthia Carr

In the late 1960s and early '70s, no one was like Candy Darling--or rather, no one lived as out loud a life as she did. Darling was a transgender superstar; a singular unicorn in Andy Warhol films, anarchic Off-Off-Broadway happenings, and Manhattan's red carpets. Carr's stellar biography is a ride through her chaotic milieu, from depressing Long Island suburbs to crashed-on couches and backstages crackling with bitchery. A mess of a life and a mess of a story, they couldn't be more fabulous.

Candy Darling by Cynthia Carr

Though it seems impossible to create a full enough picture of Candy Darling's life from available material, Carr's is a truly biographical achievement--one that succeeds even if at times Carr has to weave together what seem to be conflicting accounts and vignettes. And she does this work with the utmost respect for Candy Darling's identity and the lack of trans-inclusive language at the time (1944-1974). This is probably the only biography of Candy Darling we will ever get, and we are incredibly lucky it was done by such a careful and thoughtful author.

Ten Bridges I've Burnt by Brontez Purnell

Staff Pick

This book makes me think more people should write their memoirs in verse--but then again, most people aren't Brontez Purnell. Recounting his life via moments and sporadic snapshots, Purnell skillfully unleashes flurries of words that are by turns angry and delicate. From beating up a fellow poet at a conference to reflecting on himself as a self-proclaimed toxic-ass bachelor, this is a wild ride.
