Apsara Engine, by Bishakh Som

Staff Pick

Som's beautiful collection of stories will keep readers on their toes as she unflinchingly challenges cultural and gender norms and opens up new worlds and possibilities, inviting us to expand the limits of imagination. Throughout, Som's interest in interrogating spatiality is evident not simply in the text but in the way she presents her work, employing traditional comic-book techniques then switching it up to emphasize larger-than-life moments. Mixing the fantastic with the more banal parts of everyday life, Som reminds us that even within what we consider normative there is always space for much deeper, richer possibilities--sometimes it's only a matter of creating that space ourselves.

House of X/Powers of X, by Jonathan Hickman

Staff Pick

Both a natural evolution for the world of the X-Men and unlike anything done previously with the characters, this collection is an excellent introduction to Jonathan Hickman’s burgeoning “Dawn of X” universe. With House of X and Powers of X, he takes Marvel’s mutants further from the realm of superhero stories and deeper into the world of speculative fiction in an engrossing narrative that spans three timelines and dozens of characters. This is one of the boldest and most ambitious mainstream comics in years, packed with clever world building, humor, pathos, and the promise of so much more. And it’s the rare case of a comic being perfect for both longtime fans and new readers.
