Em, by Kim Thuy

Staff Pick

Told in lyrical stories that link the destines of different characters, Kim's haunting novel unfolds during the Vietnam War and incorporates many actual events, notably Operation Baby Lift. While conveying a lot in a few pages, the author skillfully excavates layers of pain and trauma to reveal grace and the resistance of the human spirit.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown, by Talia Hibbert

Staff Pick

The first book in the Brown Sisters trilogy, this is a cute, cheesy romance with funny dialogue that nonetheless delves into serious topics such as chronic illness and mental health. The main characters, Chloe Brown and Redford Morgan, are both likeable and independent--even when they get together, they still pursue their own interests--and though it’s a hate-to-love story, I was rooting for both of them in their separate endeavors. And, for audio-book afficionados, the taped version features a great British narrator.

Friday Black, By Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

Staff Pick

Exploring race, classism, and capitalism, these razor-sharp stories comprise a strange, powerful, important collection, one that has only become more important and relevant since its publication in 2018. Using the power of fiction to lay bare difficult truths about contemporary America, Adjei-Brenyah constructs compelling dystopian surfaces that render the realities of life for Black Americans in honest, brutal, and unforgettable ways. These stories may seem futuristic, but they get to the heart of the country today.
