A Boy and a Jaguar - Alan Rabinowitz, Catia Chien
Alan Rabinowitz recalls for us his painful, voiceless childhood as a stutterer. “The teachers think I am broken. Am I?” His voice froze when he tried to speak to humans, but was released when he was with animals: the small pets he collected at home, and one special jaguar at the Bronx Zoo. Caged in a bare room, the jaguar seemed as trapped and voiceless as young Alan was, and so he swore that one day he would speak for animals. Cátia Chien’s delicate illustrations bring to life the story of A Boy and a Jaguar (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $16.99), and a heartfelt promise made and, incredibly, kept. Ages 5-8. Emily Ellerbe
