With a mix of memoir and essay, Brittney Cooper reflects on how her own life experiences continue to shape her black feminist theory. From poverty to Christianity, she shows how systemic inequalities influence the daily lives of black women and she has learned to grapple with these outside factors affecting her own life. Cooper learns how to take her rage from the mistreatment and sadness she faces in her life and turn it into joy. I highly recommend this book.

Celestial and Roy seem to have the ideal “Spelhouse” marriage until Roy is convicted of a crime he did not commit. Once Roy is released from prison, Celestial must figure out if she is going to restart her life with him, or continue her relationship with her childhood friend, Andre. The impact of the criminal justice system on their marriage makes this story not just a love triangle, but one that is painfully American, leaving each character to live with a problem they did not create.

As someone new to romance, I must sing Alyssa Cole’s praises for blending historical fiction with romance to make an entertaining novel. Elle is a free black woman who goes undercover for the Union Army during the Civil War. She then meets Malcolm, a white Union Army agent, also undercover as a Confederate soldier.  An unexpected romance blossoms between them, while each must serve their country and fight for their unconventional love. For those interested in reading romance, this is a great place to start.
