Like a Mother: A Feminist Journey Through the Science and Culture of Pregnancy -- Angela Garbes

Staff Pick

After devouring the typical prenatal reads, Angela Garbes still had questions. Why is my body doing this? Why is society telling me not to do that? It’s easy for onlookers to judge the occasional glass of wine but most can’t understand the turmoil of a miscarriage, ruptured birth plan, or lost sense of self. Diving into these issues, Garbes captures the triumphs and defeats of those experiencing pregnancy and motherhood. From the elation (or trauma) of the pink strip, to the challenges of returning to work, this must-read book focuses on the mother as a human, and not simply a vessel.

More Than Enough -- Elaine Welteroth

Staff Pick

Many people know of  Elaine Welteroth’s work with Teen Vogue and of her lucky white boots, I was elated to find out she has written a memoir. Because she was the youngest editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue and the first African American director of beauty and health at Condé Nast, I thought I would fall into a book that was full of advice on how she became just that. But this book is the opposite. Instead of writing an advice book, she has been honest about her career and how hard it was being a FOD (first, only, different) in her industry and what happens when you make it to the top.

Women: Our Story -- DK

Staff Pick

Often with coffee table books, I’ll flip through them, think “hey this is cool”, and ultimately ponder “but do I really need to own this?” The answer for this book was easy: yes. Yes I do need to own this and get everyone I know to own it, too. Following a timeline from 600ce to present day, Women: Our Story spans the globe and touches on the other side of the past; from the worship of goddesses and female pharaohs, to the important roles of women in world wars and politics today. Artists, musicians, religious leaders, royalty, pioneers, and martyrs: this is a book of herstory.
