Rakesfall by Vajra Chandrasekera

Staff Pick

Chandrasekera's highly ambitious second novel takes head-on seemingly every scientific and mystical idea ever discussed in the SF genre and succeeds in doing so wildly and wonderfully. Following his two protagonists as they are reincarnated across many lives, stories, and time-periods, Chandrasekera sketches a history and a future of liberational struggle that is at once awe-inspiring, epic, uncanny, and familiar. I can't recommend this literary marvel highly enough!

The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord

Staff Pick

If you love the romantasy (romantic fantasy) trend, give this sci-fi romance (sci-fimance?) a try! Lord's novel centers on Grace, a biotechnician deployed by the government of Cygnus Beta to aid the humans of Sadiri in rebuilding their society after a genocidal attack destroyed their homeworld. The narrative's scientific expedition is a whirlwind, episodic, anthropological tour of Cygnus Beta, as Grace accompanies the Sadiri, led by aloof heartthrob psychic Dllenahkh (did I mention that the Sadiri are telepaths and Grace is an empath?), on their search for diasporic remnants of their culture. This book is a pure delight as it packs in comedies of manners, unique romances, heartbreaking tragedies, workplace hijinks, and stunningly beautiful meditations on the natures of humanity, time, and consciousness.

Saint Death's Daughter by C.S.E.Cooney

Staff Pick

This coming-of-age tale follows the trials and troubles of Miscellaneous Stones, the powerful young scion of a family of necromancers with an allergy to violence. Cooney's writing is nothing less than poetry--a veritable feast of language set in a uniquely imagined world where the majority of people are gender fluid and magic is commonplace. The language is as funny as that of The Locked Tomb or Discworld, as well as reminiscent of the most depressed Jane Austen characters, only with more skeletons and macabre decor. Call it beautiful, absurd, vibrant, decadent, and the best--and weirdest--fantasy novel I've read this year.
