The Unbroken by C.L. Clark

Staff Pick

Inspired by French colonial history in northern Africa, The Unbroken follows Touraine, who was conscripted as a child to fight for the Empire’s army.  But when, on returning to her homeland, she stops a near assassination attempt of Balladaire’s princess, she begins to question all she's stood for. This novel engenders what makes fantasy my favorite genre: how we can imagine radically revolutionary worlds superimposed on our very real histories. Any lover of military fantasy, sapphic tenderness, or rebellion needs to pick this up right now!

Lives of the Monster Dogs by Kirsten Bakis

Staff Pick

Why were we made? If those that made us are monsters, would that make us monsters too? This incredible first novel asks big questions, and it does so through talking cybernetic dogs, mad scientists, shifting points of view, and a range of forms including letters, articles, historical records, and even opera. That Bakis is able to tell a brilliant story with such a bonkers premise is due to her unflinchingly confident prose, deeply interesting characters, and fully realized world.
