Political drama, fantasy adventure and a noir-ish mystery all at once, The Spire is an exciting new genre-blending comic that isn't afraid to be a little weird. The Spire is a giant tower city, a self-contained world within itself where humans and 'skews', supernatural creatures, live side by side but not in harmony. The city is rife with socio-economic, racial and political tensions that are only intensified by a brutal serial killer terrorizing humans and skews alike. If you're looking for a fun, fantastical world that's a little off-beat, this is perfect.

This is a book to read and re-read.In Tom Gauld’s Mooncop space may be the final frontier but the moon certainly isn’t. In fact the prospects on the lunar colony are so dismal that the inhabitants are literally packing up shop and returning to Earth. As you can imagine this leaves our hero Mooncop with not a lot to do. But, like the ancient lineage of heroes before him, he persists! He goes about his day, fulfilling his responsibilities as best he can, while the agents of progress not so much close in around him as just up and leave. This is a quietly hilarious story about a man who didn’t mean to be left behind but who keeps clocking in at work anyway because hey, what else are you going to do? If you’re looking to have a laugh at the absurdity of it all, then Mooncop, with its perfect artwork to match, is for you.

Retelling two daring, violent and captivating arctic expeditions, How to Survive in the North, also deftly blends a narrative of middle age angst (and mistake) into an adventure story of true beauty. Robert Bartlett's fierce determination and skill, Ada Blackjack's resourcefulness, and Vilhjalmur Stefansson's wild, blundering, optimistic naiveté make excellent reading. The story is made more moving by the lightness of Healy's linework, and the steady plodding of his narrative grids. An excellent visual and narrative package.
