Timmy Failure (Candlewick, $14.99) is a detective whose only obstacles to success are his mother, his school, his “idiot best friend,” and his polar bear. The polar bear, Total, is Timmy’s inept partner in their detective agency, Total Failure, Inc. Timmy tries to manage his caseload despite his interfering teacher and competition from a girl he’d rather not talk about. Stephan Pastis’s illustrated novel, his first for young readers, conveys Timmy’s total obliviousness with humor and warmth as it introduces readers to this intrepid detective. Ages 8-12. HWP

When Ely’s pet dog Tommy dies, he is devastated, but luckily he soon finds a new animal friend in Doug TenNapel’s comic Tommysaurus Rex (Graphix, $10.99 pb/$19.99 hb). In an abandoned cave behind his grandfather’s house, Ely stumbles upon a full-grown, living Tyrannosaurus rex. The two soon become fast friends, but the town proves less immediately accepting of this new “pet”. In TenNapel’s bold signature style, this graphic novel interweaves the surreal with the realistic and humorous, creating a tone that is relatable and entertaining. This is a unique and intriguing story that is both clever and readable. Ages 9-12. CEB

Opening with a euphoric childhood dream of flying, Little White Duck (Graphic Universe, $9.95) turns immediately afterwards to a scene of grief at the death of Mao Zedong in 1976 as remembered by the three-year-old protagonist. This sets the tone for the majority of the story, in which the mythologies and fantasies of childhood are drawn alongside and often inform gritty reality. A memoir in graphic novel form, Na Liu and Andres Vera Martinez present a seemingly simplistic vision of childhood in six self-contained yet interrelated sketches drawn liberally from Liu’s life. The evocative artwork and brief, vivid memories are layered without any strict linear causal narrative. Though appropriate in content for younger readers, Little White Duck’s understated charm and deceptive simplicity are best appreciated by those familiar with the historical context. Ages 12 and up.
