Snow White: A Graphic Novel - Matt Phelan

Staff Pick

A beautiful young woman. An evil, jealous stepmother. Seven…boys? Matt Phelan’s brilliantly original graphic rendition of Snow White (Candlewick, $19.99) is not for the faint-hearted. Set in 1920s New York City, Snow’s father is a stockbroker and her stepmother a Broadway star known as Queen of the Follies; a stock ticker replaces the omniscient mirror; and a Macy’s holiday window becomes the glass coffin. The Art Deco font used for the title and chapter headings reflects the era, and Phelan’s primarily black-and-gray pencil, ink, and watercolor illustrations provide a stark contrast to the occasional burst of red and the full-color, happily-ever-after ending. Ages 10-14.

Escrito y Dibujado Por Enriqueta/Written and Drawn by Henrietta - Liniers

Edades 5-8

Upon receiving a brand-new pack of colored pencils (which, she notes, is “as close as you can get to owning a piece of the rainbow”), a young girl begins to make a story Written and Drawn by Henrietta (Toon, $12.95). Watch with wonder as Henrietta swoops onto the paper, creating a tale so engrossing she even begins to believe it herself. As she works, she gives her cat, Fellini—and the reader—tips on how to make an amazing story. Thanks to Argentine cartoonist Liniers’s own storytelling genius, Henrietta’s tale-within-a-tale, replete with monsters and a strangely familiar young girl filled to the brim with bravery, will enchant young audiences as much as Henrietta herself does. Ages 5-8
