The Travelling Cat Chronicles -- Hiro Arikawa

Staff Pick

The big conceit of Hiro Arikawa's Traveling Cat Chronicles is that the book is narrated in halves - a third-person account of the protagonist, Satoru, and a first-person narrative from the point of view of his faithful cat, Nana, as they drive across Japan in search of a temporary home for Nana, for reasons that are not entirely clear. It's a premise that feels almost too-cute-by-half at first, gradually growing on you as the book progresses - up until the beautiful and tragic third act, when the rug is pulled out from under the reader and the narrative seems all the more poignant. This is a book to be curled up with in the coziest possible reading space, with, if you're lucky enough, a purring feline by your side.
