The Queen of Dirt Island, by Donal Ryan

This intergenerational tale of Irish mothers explores the various bonds that hold families together--or break them apart. Doing a lot with a little, Ryan has created an atmosphere brooding with emotion, one made of subtle moments that carry a weight you don't recognize until it hits you. All in all, his novel is furtive and dark, poetic and beautiful.
