Writing in her unique, lyrical and witty style, Melissa Broder gives us a very grown-up (some scenes NSFW, yet mesmerizing), very realistic take on a woman falling in love with a merman. (Why should literary relationships with merpeople always be man/mermaid, after all?) We feel for Broder’s protagonist, Lucy, through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, the most passionate of declarations and the most painful of arguments, and the fullest of experiences and emptiest of nights alone that only obsessive love can inspire. Although the ending is very unexpected, it will continue to stay with you long after you finish reading.
