The Performance of Becoming Human - Daniel Borzutzky

Staff Pick

Angry and surreal, this book speaks to the moment. Borzutzky repeatedly asks if we’ve heard “the one about,” but these poems aren’t jokes, and the many “gags” they toss around are the kind meant for silencing. Borzutzky will not be silenced. In long prose-like lines—lines that challenge the “invisible” ones between countries—he talks about immigration and economics, but not in the ways sanctioned by social science. Borzutzsky doesn’t deal with data or abstractions, but with bodies—bloody, needy, beaten, and indomitable bodies. Bodies with rights, and above all, with stories and songs—which might turn out to be the “songs and stories for the end of the world”—it’s up to us.
