The Noise of Time - Julian Barnes

Staff Pick

The Soviets destroyed Shostakovitch’s soul, not by arresting or killing him, but by allowing him to live and forcing him to support their regime. Although you won’t get a sense of Shostakovitch’s music from reading this slender novel, Julian Barnes’ exhaustively researched and distilled narrative is a remarkable portrait of his moral compromise. I was plunged right into the troubled times, and thoroughly enjoyed the cameo appearances of Akhmatova, Prokofiev and other cultural figures of the day.
