New Cold Wars by David E. Sanger

Staff Pick

Three decades ago, when the Cold War ended, the notion of a “peace dividend” was fashionable and conventional thinking envisioned an era of stability and prosperity during which a declining Russia and rising China would integrate themselves into the West in their own ways. Well, things haven’t quite worked out like that. As journalist David Sanger explains in New Cold Wars, the United States is now facing a new period of conflict with both Russia and China. Sanger looks at the reasons behind this renewed confrontation and the extent to which U.S. misjudgments and mistakes contributed to it. He cautions that it would be wrong to regard the revived tensions as simply a replay of old Cold War ones and warns that the current rivalries are likely to be even more challenging to manage.
