Invisible Man - Ralph Waldo Ellison

Staff Pick

The Invisible Man is one of the most difficult novels I have ever read. An unnamed narrator recounts his journey from the rural, destitute, and black South to the streets of Harlem, where he becomes a spokesperson for the Communist party, all the while struggling to make clear his own identity and place in America's current time and history. I found the book jarring yet engaging. Its ambiguity lends itself to different interpretations, and perhaps that was Ellison's intention.
