Hild - Nicola Griffith

Hild is a novel of war and courtly politics, as well as a detailed look into day-to-day life in 7th century Northumbria. Young Hild’s struggle to establish herself as seer, influence military decisions, and generally remain alive and relevant in her uncle’s hostile court is punctuated with quiet afternoons carding flax and tending the dairy. The author does a fantastic job of humanizing people who lived in such a distant and volatile time. Perfect for fans of complicated Western European medieval politics and powerful female characters (think Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall, but featuring Brienne from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire.)
