The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Knopf, $24.95), by Stieg Larsson, is a classic who-done-it as well as a fascinating look into the world of international finance.  Mikael Blomkvist is an investigative financial reporter tracking a story of high-stakes corruption when he is sued for libel and convicted.  After a short prison stay, he is offered an opportunity to write a company history for a family of wealthy industrialists, the Vangers.  At the heart of their story, though, is the disappearance, some decades earlier, of one of their own, a young girl who vanished from the family’s island home in broad daylight. Enlisting the help of an enterprising young private investigator (the “girl with the dragon tattoo”), he uncovers the buried details and wrests the skeletons from the Vanger family’s closet.  Interesting and believable characters as well as a taut and provocative story-line set this apart from other mystery novels.
