Funny Weather, by Olivia Laing

Staff Pick

Funny Weather is a collection of essays documenting Laing’s adventures as an art aficionado, an ardent reader, and a compassionate writer. The book discusses loneliness in the age of digital dependencies, the making of a family in times of gender fluidity, the impact of art on the lives of famous musicians and writers, and tracks Laing's fascination with gardening, art making, and writing in tumultuous times. She is touched by everything that is human and thought provoking in the realm of art and creative expression. Her empathetic writing on the work of artists lost to the AIDS crisis reminds us of the solace art brings in a difficult time. Her encounter with Chantal Joffe, an artist who paints Laing's portrait while confessing to having read her book, The Lonely City, is an ingenious exchange on art between two creative souls, and my favorite moment in the book. "Feral" is another beautiful essay about Laing's brave abandonment of her "consumer" and "social" selves, one that invites readers to imagine their own lives without consumerism. The book is humble, yet powerful.
