In 1940 Nazi occupied France, Varian Fry spearheaded a rescue operation which involved obtaining visas and finding safe passage to the United States for an estimated 3000 imperiled artists. In Orringer’s new book which has been ten years in the making, we meet such figures as Hannah Arendt, Marc Chagall, Max Ernst and Andre Breton. But with the invention of the fictional character Elliott Grant, she manages to pose further provocative questions about race, sexual preference and artistic accomplishment and the roles they play in who and what is deemed worth opportunity and survival. This novel is an extraordinary tour de force and has been well worth the wait.
