Jo Walton - Farthing

In 1941, England, lacking aid from the US, negotiated peace with Nazi Germany and withdrew from World War II. It is 1949, and Hitler is very much alive. Jo Walton sets her unnerving version of a ‘cozy’ mystery against this alternative history backdrop. A group of rich English families - the ‘Farthing set’ - is enjoying a retreat in a country house when one of their members (and, incidentally, the architect of the ‘Farthing’ peace between Nazi Germany and UK) is found murdered, with a yellow Star of David pinned to his chest. Suspicion immediately falls on the only Jew invited to the retreat, but the lead detective is not immediately convinced. Farthing is a ‘country house’ mystery with incredibly high stakes and a chilling vision of a world that could have been.
