Dodgers - Bill Beverly

This unusual coming-of-age tale by a local author and Catholic University professor is one of my favorite novels of the year so far. Its protagonist is a teenage boy named East whose charm and innocence are constantly tested by his role as a lookout for his uncle’s drug and gang empire in Los Angeles. Sent by his uncle with three other boys, including his wild and wily little brother, to murder a rival in Wisconsin, the boys set off on an unforgettable road trip that exposes the tensions (and comedy) building among them. As a reader one aches for East as he tries desperately to make the right decisions with no one trustworthy to guide him.
