Deep Lane - Mark Doty

Doty’s nine "Deep Lane" poems function as a kind of branching root system, taking the poet back to his former selves, past loves, and old haunts, as well as through a present itself haunted by the “apparitions” of his still-disapproving parents, a new relationship, and the lessons he’s been “taught by craving.” These include his needs for both “wild” moments and domesticity, for the difficult beauty of “bruise-blessed flowers,” and above all  for depth, whether by digging up radishes or standing in a storm that’s “depth-charged with ozone and exhilaration.” A dedicated gardener and observer of animals, Doty absorbs nature’s life cycle to the extent that, breaking into his own house, he falls through the window in such a way that he feels born anew.
