Death in the Vines: A Verlaque and Bonnet Provencal Mystery - M. L. Longworth

The third in M.L. Longworth’s excellent Provence series, Death in the Vines (Penguin, $15), is a mystery that takes serpentine twists while focusing on day-to-day life and the region’s encroaching suburbs. Longworth’s great investigator, Commissioner Paulik, along with his sometime partner, Marie Bonnet, and a local Judge, engage in deft interplay that brings readers close to the characters and the action—which involves both small events and a murder. As in her previous books, Longworth excels here at making the physical aspects of her novel as mouthwateringly real as her characters are familiar. Enjoy this intriguing taste of Provence this summer.
