Daphne - Will Boast

Staff Pick

Boast’s graceful and affecting love story explores the treachery and salvation of emotions, but not in the usual ways. Daphne, a coder and engineer, suffers from a rare condition known as narcolepsy with cataplexy. She’s literally paralyzed by feelings, whether her own or those of a friend, stranger, or fictional character. When overwhelmed by joy or sorrow, she can only fall down, unable to move or speak. People mistake her for drunk, or even dead. During these episodes Daphne is physically helpless, but her struggle to avoid attacks also constrains her life: she can’t drive; avoids movies, crowds, and relationships. Yet even as she feels herself “bend and warp” around her “impediment,” she still needs love as much as anyone else, and when she meets tender, unassuming Ollie, a relationship tentatively flowers. Daphne can only allow herself so much empathy, however, and her seeming coldness in the face of others’ suffering shocks even Ollie. Is she doomed, like her mythic namesake, to the immobile life of a tree? Boast’s beautiful prose and deep compassion suggest otherwise.
