Autumn - Ali Smith

Staff Pick
“Whoever makes up the story makes up the world,” Ali Smith says. The world of her rich and buoyant novel is made up of Shakespeare’s Tempest, Huxley’s Brave New World, Dickens’s Tale of Two Cities, but also of Brexit, immigrants, gentrification, and bureaucracy. It opens with a magical, impossible scene, and closes with the feminist Pop artist Pauline Boty painting something radically new, a work that “slapped the past in its face.” Smith’s narrative time travels between Elisabeth’s childhood and her adult life, the periods bridged by her friendship with an elderly neighbor who teaches her about lies, art, and dreams. Is fiction a lie? Does memory have “responsibilities” or does it go its own way? Smith questions the past and the present, always with a light touch. Her prose is precise and often breathtakingly lovely, showing us an old man “whose eyebrows were moments of frost” and a cloud of pollen is “like the smoke around a conjuring trick.”
