Join Rick Massimo, author of A Walking Tour of the Georgetown Set, for a tour of the neighborhood that was home to the bureaucratic, journalistic, and spy elites of Washington during the Cold War.

In the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s, Washington was a very different place, and so was Georgetown. The main form of recreation for the people running the country – and, by extension, the world – in those days was to go to each other’s houses for dinner, drinks, and conversation. They were friendly affairs, but underneath the chit-chat, real work was being done. To tour those houses and remember the people who lived in them is to see the history of that era in a new way that finds the domestic and the diplomatic crashing together.

The tour includes houses lived in by President John F. Kennedy, Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham and CIA director Allen Dulles, as well as a throng of people who aren’t as well-known, but who played pivotal roles in U.S. history.

We’ll see the house where a tea set was knocked over to stave off an international incident, the restaurant where a Soviet defector escaped through a bathroom, the house Kennedy made his last stop on Inauguration Night, and a whole lot more.

The group will gather to begin the walk at 1 p.m., outside the Georgetown Neighborhood Library, found at 3260 R St NW, Washington, DC 20007, which is at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue NW and R Street NW.

The Dupont Circle Metro Station, the closest train station, is a little more than a mile away from this location, so it is advised to research your local bus routes if you’re looking for alternative public transportation options.
