Reading Partners DC's wish list

Reading Partners empowers young students to build the reading skills they need to reach their full potential. We engage trained community volunteers to provide effective one-on-one instruction using our research-backed, easy-to-use curriculum. In 2021-22, we are committed to serving 950 students while partnering with 21 elementary schools across Washington, D.C. (12 of which are located in Wards 7 and 8).

Many of our students bring up issues of race when working with their tutors. From discussing their identities to understanding those of the characters they are reading about, it is clear that diversity in our texts is of the utmost importance to support our students. If we have books available that will allow tutors to have intentional conversations about race with our students, and that will help tutors affirm positive thinking and behavior when it comes to race, we can use literacy to inspire confidence in our students who need it most.

We are so glad you, too, believe in the power of educational equity to interrupt systemic racism, poverty, and social inequality. We are thankful for your support!
