This Saturday, November 14, Planet Green will air the documentary, COAL COUNTRY, a film by Mari-Lynn Evans and Phyllis Geller. Their film explores coal mining and the Appalachian communities “deeply split over mountaintop removal mining (MTR).” Miners and their families struggle with the issue of jobs versus community health problems, dirty water, coal dust and grime. We now carry the brand new DVD of COAL COUNTRY (Liaison, $22.98).
There is also an accompanying CD, COAL COUNTRY MUSIC (Liaison, $13.98), with previously unreleased songs from a wide-ranging group: John Prine, Bonnie Raitt, Gillian Welch, Natalie Merchant, the Klezmatics, Willie Nelson, Jean Ritchie, Diana Jones, Tom T. Hall, and many more.
Also check out the accompanying book, COAL COUNTR: Rising Up Against Mountaintop Removal Mining (Sierra Club, $25.95), by Shirley Burns.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the new Henry Threadgill album, THIS BRINGS US TO, VOL. 1 (Pi, $15.98). Nate Chinen wrote a profile in last Sunday’s See New York Times ( ).
Mr. Threadgill has been one of jazz’s most forward-looking composers and players for over three decades. A co-founder of the cooperative trio, Air, in the 1970s, Threadgill has lately concentrated more on composing, and leading a variety of small ensembles. His quintet, Zooid, includes electric guitar, trombone/tuba, bass, and guitar, with Mr. Threadgill on flute and alto sax. Check out the beautiful timbres, colors, and textures that he brings forth.

BEETHOVEN: COMPLETE SYMPHONIES (BIS, 5 CDs, $43.98)—The most well received Beethoven cycle of recent years has been the Minnesota Orchestra’s, conducted by Osmo Vänskä. The individual CDs have been collected in a slim box set for a reduced price.
