NEW
She & Him, VOLUME TWO (Merge, $15.98) – Matt Ward (M. Ward) and Zooey Deschanel follow up their first collaboration with mostly original songs with a retro sound (in the words of the Post Express, “equal part  vintage twang, Wall of Sound pop, and ’60s folk”).

Mose Allison, THE WAY OF THE WORLD (Anti, $17.98) – Mose Allison has played his sly and witty songs for decades, in his distinctive, laid-back Mississippi drawl, influencing many jazz and pop singers and players. His bluesy piano playing is just as distinctive. Mr. Allison’s new album – his first in ten years – continues his winning ways. Listen to a short conversation with Mose and producer Joe Henry on NPR (here).

Mark O’Connor and Friends, JAM SESSION (OMAC, $15.98) – Jam sessions are staples at bluegrass and old-time music festivals, clubs and house parties. Here, string masters Mark O’Connor on fiddle, Chris Thile on mandolin, Frank Vignola and Bryan Sutton on guitar, Jon Burr and Byron House on bass, get together in various configurations, all in live settings at concerts and festivals. This is hot picking at its best.

THE T.A.M.I. SHOW (Shout Factory, DVD, $19.98) – The concert filmed on October 29, 1964, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, featured a who’s who of stars representing rock ’n’ roll, soul, Motown, surf music, the British Invasion, and Brill Building pop:  James Brown, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Miracles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Leslie Gore, Chuck Berry, Jan and Dean, and more are here, in thrilling live performances.
