Baden Powell, LIVE IN BERLIN (MPS, 2 CDs, $17.98) – Baden Powell (1937 – 2000) was a masterful guitarist, combining classical technique with a mighty swing, at home with bossa nova, samba, Brazilian jazz, choro, and music from Bahia and Sertão. His 1959 melody became the hit song, “Samba Triste,” and he co-wrote great songs with Vinicius de Moraes. You can listen to the breadth of his work in one of his final live appearances, in Berlin in 2000.

Bill Evans Trio, ON A FRIDAY EVENING (Craft Recordings, $16.98) – The Bill Evans Trio (with Eddie Gomez, bass, and Eliot Zigmund, drums), recorded live on the evening of June 20, 1975, at Oil Can Harry’s, Vancouver, and never before released. The trio plays a set with a few deep cuts in the Evans catalog: “Sareen Jurer,” “Quiet Now,” “Blue Serge,” and “The Two Lonely People.”

Rubén Blades y Roberto Delgado & Orquesta, SALSWING! (Rubén Blades, $15.98)

and SALSA PLUS! (Rubén Blades, $15.98) – Rubén Blades continues the salsa-swing mix as first heard on Una Noche con Rubén Blades with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (2018), by collaborating with the Roberto Delgado Orquesta.

SHOSTAKOVICH: SYMPHONIES NOS. 1, 14, 15 & CHAMBER SYMPHONY (Deutsche Grammophon, 2 CDs, $20.98) – The latest installment in Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s ongoing Shostakovich project, now numbering five volumes.

A few weeks ago, Joan Baez was honored at this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. An honor well deserved.

Five years ago, there was another celebration for Ms. Baez, captured on DVD and CD, 75TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION (Razor & Tie, 2 CDs & 1 DVD, $25.98).

The concert was held on January 27, 2016, at the Beacon Theatre, with guests singing solo and dueting with Ms. Baez: Mavis Staples, Paul Simon, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Judy Collins, Indigo Girls, Richard Thompson, Jackson Browne, and Nano Stern. The set contains both CDs and a DVD of the concert.

Also, don’t forget Ms. Baez’s last album, Whistle Down the Wind (2018), with some great songs.
