Music News 2/24/22

Caetano Veloso, MEU COCO (BMG Germany, $19.99) – Caetano Veloso—Tropicália innovator, singer and songwriter—has been a Brazilian (and international) music force since the 1960s. Meu Coco (My Head) is his first album of all new songs in over a decade—and the album was on many best-of lists.

Not yet domestically released, I nabbed a few import copies.

NOTE: Chris Richards of the Washington Post did a fine interview with Caetano last year, and there was a long profile in the Feb. 7 issue of the New Yorker

Khruangbin & Leon Bridges, TEXAS MOON (Dead Oceans, $11.98) – Two years ago, the trio, Khruangbin, teamed up with the great soul singer, Leon Bridges, and released Texas Sun. Now that 4-song extended play album is followed up with Texas Moon, a 5-song EP. The great voice of Mr. Bridges and the global, surf-lounge sounds of Khruangbin are a natural pairing for some late-night listening.

NIKOLAI KAPUSTIN: BLUEPRINT (Capriccio, $16.99) – Nikolai Kapustin (1937 – 2020) was a Russian composer who wrote many jazz-influenced works. Pianist Frank Dupree had the inspired idea to play these (fully notated) works in a full jazz trio context, with fantastic swing provided by bassist Jakob Krupp and drummer Meinhard ‘Obi’ Jenne. A winner.

BACH: GOLDBERG VARIATIONS (Erato, 2 CDs, $19.98) – Harpsichordist Jean Rondeau consulted an original printed edition of the Goldberg Variations, with Bach’s own markings and corrections, and used these for his own insightful take on the work.

Carolyn Surrick & Ronn McFarlane, FERMI’S PARADOX (Sono Luminus, $15.98) – Local viola da gamba player Carolyn Surrick (Ensemble Gallilei) and lute player Ronn McFarlane got together for a pandemic project, arranging and playing songs old and new. There’s Dowland, Marais, Bach, Telemann, plus Irish tunes, originals by both Carolyn and Ronn, even the Allman Brothers’s lovely “Little Martha.”
