Joe Lovano, Marilyn Crispell, Carmen Castaldi (Trio Tapestry), GARDEN OF EXPRESSION (ECM, $18.98) – The second collaboration of Trio Tapestry: saxophonist Joe Lovano, pianist Marilyn Crispell, and drummer Carmen Castaldi, playing a program of all new Lovano tunes. 

GESUALDO: MADRIGALI: LIBRI TERZO & QUARTO (Harmonia Mundi, 2 CDs, $21.98) – Les Arts Florissants’s Gesualdo: Madrigali Libri Primo & Secondo won Gramophone Magazine’s Best Early Music Recording for 2020. Now, director Paul Agnew focuses on Books III and IV, the Ferrara period of this composer’s forward-looking madrigal writing. 

BLUES DIVAS (Rough Guide Music, $1.99) – The Rough Guide to… and The Rough Guide to the Music of… series of CDs has grown to over three hundred titles. They cover all parts of the world, many genres, and historical periods. If you’ve watched the recent production of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a Rough Guide compilation of women blues artists of the 1920s is a great introduction to this era. Blues Divas includes Ma Rainey (whose portrait is on the cover), Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Ida Cox, Louise Bogan, Ethel Waters, Alberta Hunter, and many more—there are 25 tracks in all on the compilation.
