Ches Smith and We All Break, PATH OF SEVEN COLORS (Pyroclastic, $17.98) – Drummer, vibes player, and percussionist has led groups, and played with Dave Holland, Linda May Han Oh, Tim Berne, and Marc Ribot. For the last decade and a half, he’s studied Haitian ceremonial drumming, and formed a group named for the Haitian Creole word kase or “break” — “a structural marker in Vodou drumming that challenges the time-feel and cues ceremonial activity. We All Break explores and develops profound connections between traditional Haitian Vodou and contemporary sounds from the broad palette of improvised music.” The octet features alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón, pianist Matt Mitchell, Nick Dunston on bass, Sirene Dantor Rene on vocals, and master drummers Daniel Brevil, Markus Schwartz, and Fanfan Jean-Guy Rene on tambou and vocals. 

 

Cat Power, COVERS (Domino, $14.99) – Cat Power (Chan Marshall) covers tunes by Frank Ocean, the Pogues, Bob Seger, Iggy Pop, Kitty Wells, Lana Del Rey, Nick Cave, the Replacements, Billie Holiday, and Jackson Browne, among others.

FLORENCE PRICE: SYMPHONIES Nos. 1 & 3 (Deutsche Grammophon, $14.98) – Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra continue the revival momentum of the neglected works of Florence Price (1887 – 1953).  

 

Bruce Liu, CHOPIN: Piano Works: Winner of the International Chopin Piano Competion 2021 (Deutsche Grammophon, $14.98) – Mr. Liu’s winning live performances from the recent Chopin Piano Competition, held in October in Warsaw. The Canadian pianist plays a selection from the Études, Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Scherzos, Waltzes, and the Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise Brilliante

 

BACH: ENGLISH SUITES 1 – 3 (Decca, 2 CDs $21.98) – Vladimir Ashkenazy plays the first three of Bach’s English Suites. The bonus disc is Ashkenazy’s first Bach recording from 1965, the Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor, with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Zinman.
