William A. Galston - Anti-Pluralism: The Populist Threat to Liberal Democracy — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, March 21, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Galston frames the resurgence of populism as a backlash to the financial crisis, growing inequality, and immigration, one that, legitimate or not, reveals the vulnerabilities of liberal democracy and gives us the opportunity—perhaps even the duty—to strengthen it. A former policy advisor to President Clinton, Galston now holds the Ezra K. Zilkha Chair in the Governance Studies Program at Brookings and he argues that populism’s disruption of the postwar bargain between political elites and citizens requires that leaders work for inclusive economic growth while frankly addressing fraught social and cultural issues encompassing legitimate demographic anxiety.
