William F. Causey - John Houbolt: The Unsung Hero of the Apollo Moon Landings

Upcoming Event
Sunday, March 15, 2020 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Causey’s study of the life and work of John Houbolt (1919-2014) is both a tribute to an aerospace pioneer who deserves to be better known and an illuminating look at the challenges facing NASA as it worked to realize Kennedy’s vow to send a man to the moon and bring him safely home. Causey, now a docent at the National Air and Space Museum after thirty years of teaching at Georgetown University Law Center, explains the various options available to aerospace engineers in 1961 and traces the debate that first rejected Houbolt’s proposal of a lunar orbit rendezvous then agreed to what proved to be the most efficient and least expensive way to accomplish the mission by using existing rocket technology.
