Wayétu Moore - She Would Be King — at Politics and Prose at Union Market, in partnership with Young African Professionals

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, October 2, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Moore’s debut is an enthralling and utterly original novel that combines history and magic realism to reimagine the early years of Liberia. In prose that is itself lush and magical, Moore, founder of One Moore Book and a teacher at the City University of New York’s John Jay College, follows the lives of three very different characters as their destines collide with one another’s and their nation’s. June Dey was raised on a Virginia plantation and, unless provoked, hides the true extent of his remarkable strength. Norman Aragon, son of a Jamaican Maroon slave and white British colonizer, inherits his mother’s gift for invisibility. And Gbessa, who against all odds survives starvation and snake venom, is the woman the wind declares would be king, but for her gender.

This event is presented in partnership with Young African Professionals D.C.
