Tom Wheeler - From Gutenberg to Google: The History of Our Future

Upcoming Event
Sunday, February 10, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

As chairman of the FCC from 2013 to 2017 and before that as an entrepreneur, Wheeler has been a key figure in the telecommunications world for some four decades. In his new book he puts today’s tremendous technological changes in perspective by looking back at several equally overwhelming shifts in the past. Starting with the invention of movable type, he demonstrates how the printing press brought about the Renaissance, Reformation, and many major scientific developments. Next came the telegraph and the railroad, which made communication and travel faster than ever. Today’s networking revolution has already changed the nature of education, the workplace, the media, and privacy; AI, virtual reality, blockchain, and cybersecurity promise further transformations in the way we conduct our daily lives.
