Tim Bakken - The Cost of Loyalty: Dishonesty, Hubris, and Failure in the U.S. Military

Upcoming Event
Sunday, February 23, 2020 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

In addition to being the first civilian promoted to professor of law in West Point’s history, Bakken is also one of the few federal employees ever to win a whistleblowing case against the U.S. military. In his new book he shows how civilian leaders’ veneration for the armed forces, along with a popular approval that generally stands near 70%, has left the military isolated, a factor that contributes to the academies’ culture of outdated curricula and helps foster rampant corruption, arrogance, and sexual assault. These problems, in turn, have affected the military’s performance, and Bakken correlates the high rate of failure in the nation’s armed conflicts since Korea with the largely unchecked toxic environment of the country’s military institutions such as West Point.
