Hayes won the 2010 National Book Award for Lighthead, his fourth collection of poems. In his new book the MacArthur fellow and creative writing teacher at the University of Pittsburgh draws on the lives of writers ranging from Whitman to Mayakovsky to Elllison, as well as on his own work as a visual artist to question the reality of appearances in our representations of the world, considering maps, graphs, and contour drawings to tease out the assumptions they encode.
