Ted Gioia - Music: A Subversive History

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, October 22, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

An award-winning jazz critic and music historian, Gioia has taught us how to listen to the standards, the blues, the modern masters, and much in between. His new book extends his range yet further, covering some four-thousand years of music history. Focusing not on the mainstream but on the margins, Gioia chronicles how social outcasts have paved the way for new kinds of music-making. Starting with the first known melodies and moving through jazz, reggae, and hip-hop, Gioia tells stories of outsiders and rebels, shows how they repeatedly reinvented musical forms, and tracks music as an ongoing source of power and social change.
